West Sohag in Egypt Will Get Land for a 3-GW Wind Farm

A consortium of Orascom Construction, Japan's Toyota Tsusho Corp and Engie has gotten land for a planned 3-GW wind energy project in Egypt's West Sohag district.

The deal for the allocation of land was endorsed by the New and Sustainable Energy Authority (NREA) for the benefit of the Service of Power and Sustainable power, and the consortium, NREA said. The marking was gone to by head of the state Mostafa Madbouly.

The planned wind farm will be based on an area of 852 square km (329 square miles) in the West Sohag district. When functional, it is expected to produce sufficient power to every year supply around 2,000,000 neighbourhood homes and offset 6.5 million tons of carbon dioxide discharges.

The project will make around 7,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and some 1,000 permanent jobs after commissioning.

The allocation of land follows a memorandum of understanding between the three organizations and the Egyptian government that was endorsed during the COP 27 highest point in Sharm El-Sheik last November.

The alliance of companies has previously taken part in wind projects in the North African nation -  it is engaged with the improvement of the 262.5-MW Ras Ghareb wind ranch close to the Bay of Suez and started the development of a 500-MW wind park in Gabal El-Zeit in the Red Sea Governorate last autumn.
